DEVELOPING & MANAGING KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS IN HEALTHCARE SERVICE

HEALTHCORE, with its mission of equipping healthcare providers to become globally competitive providing patient-centered care and assuring patient safety, has launched a
certificate program that will develop leaders who will carry forward safe and quality healthcare delivery. The course will also help them understand the global standards in healthcare, implement, and comply with the very stringent requirements of international accreditation agencies, if desired.

Purpose

HealthCore is committed to providing healthcare leaders and staff with a set of core topics that serve as building blocks for improving quality and patient safety. This TIER 2 workshop is in continuation of the foundational subjects in TIER 1.

To improve quality of care and maximize patient safety, organization must have the tools and methods for monitoring permanence of clinical and administrative services. This monitoring requires competencies in using data management definitions, tools, and methods to select and describe measures, collected data, and to display and analyze data.

This 3-day workshop aims to improve the level of knowledge and competencies in the basic concepts, methods, and tools related to selection and description of measures which is the foundation of data management.

Participants will be taught how to gather and analyze data in developing their Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and in monitoring their clinical and administrative performance. Some of the KPI’s to be discussed are:

1) Incidence of Medication Errors
– Prescription Error – Dispensing Error
2) Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection Rate (CAUTI)
3) Ventilator Assisted Pneumonias (VAP)
4) Central Line Associated Related Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI) 5) Surgical Site Infection

Patient-Centered Healthcare Management Course (Tier 2)

Process

The workshop will provide a series of one-hour didactic lectures combined with brief tabletop exercise to demonstrate the use of concepts, methods, and tools.

Participants

Leaders, managers, and quality improvement staff in healthcare facilities will benefit from participation in this workshop. There are no specific requisitions for participation. However, participants should be in a position to improve quality and patient safety processes in their respective organizations. As a prerequisite, each participant must bring a laptop and be familiar with the basics of Excel Spreadsheet application.

MEASURE SELECTION & DESCRIPTION OF KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS IN THE HEALTHCARE SETTING

(Day 3) 6 September 2019

 

OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand how to use criteria and the literature in selecting a measure (i.e. indicator) in your hospital
  • Understand how to describe critical characteristics of a measure
  • Understand the definitions and use of numerators and denominators
  • Understand the use of percentage, rate, and ratios in reporting improvements in measurement data


THE CRITICAL QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THIS WORKSHOP ARE:

1. What is the best method for selecting measures in your department?
2. What are the criteria and the analytical method for selecting measures?
3. What are the critical characteristics of a measure?
4. What are operational definitions for numerator and denominator?
5. What are the differences in percent, ratio, and rate, and how do we use these to monitor improvement in measures?
6. How can we document and share these critical characteristics of measures?

TABLE-TOP EXERCISES FOR WORKSHOP ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. Listing of five potential measures per table
a. When possible, each participant should bring to the workshop one measure currently used in their hospital whether clinical or administrative
2. Use of prioritization matrix tool to select measures
3. Use of a measure description tool to display critical characteristics of a measure
4. Description of numerator and denominator
5. Calculation of percentages, ratios, and rates
6. Completion of a communication plan for the selected measure

DEVELOPING A DATA COLLECTION PLAN IN THE HOSPITAL

(Day 2) 5 September 2019

OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the key components of a data collection plan in the hospital
  • Understand use of data types and data elements
  • Understand sampling methods
  • Understand design and use of a data collection tool

PROCESS:

The workshop will provide a series of one-hour didactic lectures combined with brief tabletop exercise to demonstrate the use of concepts, methods, and tools.


THE CRITICAL QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THIS WORKSHOP ARE:

1. What are the components of a data collection plan?
2. What are the types of data?
3. What are primary versus secondary data elements and why are they important? 4. What are methods to sample data?
5. What is a good design of a data collection tool?

ANALYSIS & PRESENTATION OF DATA FOR MONITORING OF QUALITY & PERFORMANCE IN THE HOSPITAL

(Day 3) 6 September 2019

OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand how to use statistical methods to validate accuracy of data
  • Understand how to use tables to analyze data
  • Understand hot to use basic statistical functions to analyze data
  • Understand how to use basic graphing functions to analyze data

THE CRITICAL QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY THIS WORKSHOP ARE:

1. What are the methods for validating reliability of data?
2. What are the types tables used to analyze data?
3. What are basic statistical functions for analyzing data?
4. What are basic graphing functions for analyzing data?

TABLE-TOP EXERCISES FOR WORKSHOP ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. Practice using the measure category agreement method for analyzing data reliability
2. Constructing thee basic tables for analyzing data
3. Using Excel statistical functions to calculate mean, median, and standard deviation
4. Using Excel graphing functions to produce, pie, bar, and trend-line/run chart

Johnny Chotrani

Johnny is the Chairman of the Philippines-India Business Council (PIBC), a subsidiary designated “India Desk” under the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI). He has been working on bringing the Philippines and India together, way back from 2002, officially beginning during his term as President for the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Philippines). He is also the appointed Country Chair for the ASEAN-India Business Council (Philippines). He has represented the Philippines in various ASEAN meets under the umbrella of the ASEAN-India Business Council and has made it his personal interest passion in furthering the business relationship between India, the Philippines, and the ASEAN Countries.

 

Rtn. Johnny has been residing in the Philippines for close to four decades and has also made his personal passion of watch appreciation into e-commerce with close to fifty stores nationwide, carrying a portfolio of various Swiss Brands among others with a focus on Automatic Watches. Mr. Chotrani is also a telecommunication consultant of various hospitals.

Roberto “Obet” M. Pagdanganan

Chairman of the Board of E-HealthCore, has had an extensive experience in private sector and government service as well as in civil society organizations.  Starting as a management trainee in 1968, he held various senior technical and marketing management positions at Unilever Philippines until he joined the government when he was appointed OIC Governor of the province of Bulacan in March, 1986. He went on to serve as Bulacan Governor for 12 years during which time he was elected as National President of the League of Provinces for 3 terms and founding Chairman of the League of Leagues later renamed Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines. He had also served as Chairman of the Cooperative Development Authority, Secretary of Department of Agrarian Reforms, Secretary of Tourism, Chairman of Philippine International Trading Corporation, and founding Chairman of PITC Pharmaceuticals Inc, now known as PPPI, which launched the “Botika ng Bayan” Program to promote safe and affordable generic medicines.

 

Governor Pagdanganan is presently also Chairman of Medicines Transparency Alliance, (MeTA) Inc., and Health Retirement and Tourism Alliance (HeaRT). He is also a member of the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines where he has served as National President for four terms. He is also a Past President of the Rotary Club Of Manila, the first Rotary Club in Asia, and Past District Governor of Rotary International District 3810. 

 

Gov Pagdanganan graduated with the degrees of Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, summa cum laude, in 1968, and Bachelor of Laws in 1990, from Manuel L. Quezon University. He obtained a Masters in Business Administration at Dela Salle University in 1980. He was also granted a Doctorate in Education Management, honoris causa, by the Bulacan State University in 1995. He is presently a part-time professorial lecturer at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Open University System and an Eminent Fellow at the Philippine Public Safety College.

Jocelyn Socao-Alumno

Joyce is a staunch advocate for the Globalization of Healthcare, International Trade in Health Services and Medical Tourism. She spearheaded various initiatives in the development of the Philippines as a global healthcare destination including the Philippine Medical Tourism Program that was launched in 2006. Joyce founded HealthCore in 2010 with the vision to make the country a premier healthcare and tourism destination by introducing international quality standards in the healthcare and hospitality industry evidenced by achieving globally-recognized Quality Accreditation seals. 

 

Joyce was the former Country Head for Aster DM Healthcare (Philippines), formerly Regional Representative of Temos certification based in Germany, Representative for NABH International and by Swiss Approval International for ISO certifications in healthcare and hospitality services. In 2015, she was licensed as a National Assessor for the Accommodation Sector by the Philippines’ Department of Tourism. In addition, she authored the Philippine Medical Tourism Compendium and served as Contributing Editor to Philippine Daily Inquirer for the Philippine Health and Wellness Travel section. She worked for 12 years in investment banking where she held various positions.  

At present, she is the appointed Patient Safety Ambassador for the ASEAN region by the Patient Safety Movement Foundation based in the US, Part-Time Faculty in NEU-School of International Relations, and ISO 9001:2015 Certified Lead Auditor. 

 

Joyce finished B.S. Tourism, Cum Laude and Most Outstanding Student, from the University of Santo Tomas and completed her MBA from the Ateneo Graduate School of Business.
